Vi sono diversi tipi di Master's Degree; i più comuni sono il "Master of Arts (MA)" e il "Master of Science (MSc)" che si ottengono dopo aver seguito un corso e aver presentato una tesi originale. Per il "Master of Letters (MLitt)" e il "Master of Philosophy (MPhil)" è invece sufficiente presentare la tesi. Il più antico è lo University College di Oxford, che risale al 1249 e fu fondato come molti altri college, proprio come collegio, cioè come pensionato per studenti. Oggi i college sono entità indipendenti, ciascuna con una propria biblioteca e una cappella, che scelgono autonomamente i propri studenti e docenti. Oltre a ospitare gli studenti, il college organizza la loro vita sociale e l'attività sportiva e gestisce la parte dell'insegnamento nota come supervision system, consistente in incontri in genere settimanali di un piccolo gruppo di studenti con un tutor che tiene loro lezioni informali, li guida nella ricerca e giudica i loro elaborati. L'università si occupa invece del coordinamento dei corsi, delle lezioni aperte a tutti gli studenti, del conferimento delle lauree e della gestione delle strutture principali, ad esempio le biblioteche principali, i teatri e i musei. -
